Part 5: Strong Current Monday June 5 -- I'm still here. Paddling veeeeerrry slowly now up Sturgeon Narrouws and finally reaching Russell Narrows around 6:30PM. Current is flowing strongly out of this necked down stream and rather high water. Tried to bushwack a trail via campsite on the right (looking up stream) but no-go. Foolishly tried to paddle upstream twice against the current -- if I only had a camera somehow capturing this truly comical event on film it would have been worth it! Finally forced to quit and retreat. Camped on point (left bank) of Sturg. Narrows feeding into Sturgeon L. Very steep takeout, rock face. Campsite not bad with an upper pad that could accommodate a 2-4 person tent. A lower site and fire ring just perfect for my 1-person backpacker tent and a great view of Sturgeon. Part 6 should really start here, as the next day, after checking weather, I paddled north via Sturgeon, Deux Rivieres, Twin and Dore (portages were dry and in good condition) into Pine Portage where I spent the night. Next day, very short portage into Pickerel Lake and wind-at-the-back paddle up the Narrows back to Batch. Wind was now picking up (doesn't it always?) on Batch and had 1 to 1 1/2 ft rollers/chop along western shore of Batch up to takeout. One last long portage over a familiar friend of a trail and a very hard, fast, solo paddle (with a threatening sky at my back) across Nym to the takeout where one last 10 minute wind blast tried to blow me out of the inlet --- and I was home!
